The Latest Trends in Cosmetic Dermatology

A recent article in Allure magazine highlighted some of the most promising new skin care technologies under development. These technologies are super interesting but, for the most part, are unproven both at the clinical science level as well as the marketability level. The topical botulinum product that is mentioned first by Allure, however, is interesting and may likely be viable despite being at apparent odds with current general principals of biochemistry and cell biology.

Much of what is desirable at a market level, and might be possible on a practical level, has already been considered. Most of these potential future breakthroughs are currently under some degree of clinical investigation (with or without marketing buzz). The keys to success will be developing products that are safe and effective at addressing one or more of these cosmetic issues, delivering them to market in a way that resonates with consumers and ensuring they have defensible intellectual property rights.

A bigger trend within cosmetic dermatology in the next 3 – 5 years is likely to come from both physicians and their patients embracing social media for new and improved ways to facilitate and optimize skin care. For example, my friend and dermatologist colleague John Shen, MD recently launched AcneTrac as a means of managing acne remotely. We are seeing similar trends in high-end skin care lines with some of them offering free online video skin care analyses by licensed estheticians. Amarte is very much engaged in social media but is even more engaged in making products that customers simply must have.

Now more than ever it appears that skin care industry leaders will be leveraging the internet as well as technological breakthroughs to deliver maximum benefit to their customers.

Latest Global Breakthroughs in Skin Care Tools

In Korea there are many skin tools. Much like skin care products, the best tools will have to prove themselves clinically over time. The latest fad is high frequency skin care machines, which are purported to offer a multitude of skin benefits. These machines are popular around the world but there is not yet one leading device manufacturer dominating market share. Our sources report that it is important to use these machines in conjunction with high-quality skin care products. Vigen Company, in Korea, is reported to produce some of the best high frequency machines in Asia. Again, these are emerging technologies and the science behind them appears limited.

In America we have been overrun by pixilated lasers such as the Fraxel. The issue with these devices is that they have huge acquisition costs and, in many cases, also large per treatment disposable costs. These financial realities tend to make treatment quite expensive for patients and often unprofitable for providers. That may change. A company out of Utah has begun promoting a device called Dermapen, which provides what appears to be at least equivalent pixilated mechanical stimulation for a fraction of the equipment and materials cost of pixilated lasers. Dermapen offers the added benefit of allowing topical actives to be applied simultaneously for deep dermal penetration. While initial data looks good for Dermapen, only time will tell.

The Latest Korean Skin Tech – Coming Soon to America

There are a couple interesting natural ingredient product classes that have recently become popular in Korea but have not yet been widely promoted in America: snail secretion and silk powder.

Snail secretion -- harvested from live Chilean snails -- was popularized in Korea and brought to Japan where it became a big hit. This snail ingredient provides a pronounced tightening effect and is typically compounded in serums, creams and toners. Snail secretion is also believed to facilitate cell renewal and rejuvenation. One unfortunate factor that may be holding back snail secretion’s entry to the US market is the actual ingredient name which is hard to spin in a positive way. Amarte has several snail secretion products that will be introduced to America as our offering expands.

Another interesting new trend product in Korea and Japan is a type of commercially marketed mask made of silk powder. The best raw ingredients for silk powder mask production come from Germany. Our Korean Amarte team developed and introduced the first innovative silk mask to the Korean market in 2012. It has since been introduced to Japan and we are looking forward to bringing it to America very soon. The silk mask is an extremely tight mask experience. It is reported to exert its beneficial effect by first relaxing and then tightening muscles. The mask provides marked lifting and rejuvenating effects, which are considered in an Eastern philosophical way as improving ‘bio-circulation.’ After two to five of these masks at three-day intervals, professionally objective before and after photos consistently demonstrate improvement.

Nanotechnology is a hot topic in skincare right now. Amarte uses nano-particles to incorporate higher concentrations of retinol in Amarte products and utilizes nano sulfur for its innovative properties.

Nanoparticles are materials with at least one dimension smaller than 100 nm, or one ten-millionth of a meter. The interest in nanotechnology by skin care formulators like Amarte is primarily based on the idea that smaller particle sizes for active ingredients may facilitate the development of products with better absorption potential. Another interesting attribute of nanoparticles as they relate to dermatology is that they have a very high surface area to weight ratio relative to larger particles and thus may have an enhanced activity to weight ratio.

Optimal Delivery of Retinol

Retinol does not occur as large particles, still nanotechnology has proven very useful in devising more effective retinol-based formulations. The revolution in retinol formulation is based upon its incorporation into phospholipid nanoliposomes. Korean researchers have recently demonstrated enhanced stability of retinol in response to oxygen, UV light and temperature. In addition to enhanced stability, these nanoliposomes facilitate better absorption, deeper penetration and more prolonged diffusion of retinol thus improving its efficacy while decreasing its irritancy potential.

Amarte also encapsulates epidermal growth factor (human oligopeptide 1) for similar reasons. Nanoliposomes have a similar composition to skin cell membranes, which further promotes optimal delivery of the encapsulated actives as cell membranes can easily merge with nanoliposome membranes.

Nano Sulfur Has Enhanced Bioavailability

Sulfur is an established skin care essential that has long been recognized as conferring both cosmetic and medical benefits on the skin. The list of medical benefits is extensive and ranges from beneficial effects on rosacea and seborrheic dermatitis to positive effects on bacterial and fungal skin conditions. On the cosmetic side, Koreans have long embraced sulfur as a cosmeceutical active that is great for brightening, gently exfoliating and maintaining a positive collagen balance.

A key to Amarte’s use of sulfur is nanotechnology. Amarte uses two nanometer size sulfur particles as confirmed by Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). Nano sulfur has enhanced bioavailability due to better efficiencies of diffusion and absorption as well as the greater active presence of sulfur surface area in formulation per weight of sulfur added. This is due to the greater surface area per weight inherent in nanoparticle physics. Amarte has also developed methods of abating fragrance issues that can occur with sulfur.

Using the same skin care products for eight years might not seem like a big deal to some. But as the founder and director of a leading skin care product retailer with hundreds of different product lines and thousands of products to choose from, it speaks volumes. Because much of my work has involved evaluating and reviewing countless products both to provide objective information for customers as well as to determine which products were worthy of inclusion in the website product portfolio, I have experienced a wide range of skin care lines, including Amarte.

With Amarte There’s No Going Back

Eight years have come and gone since I began using Amarte products. I remain increasingly satisfied with products that started out excellent, and over time, have become even better. Prior to finding Amarte, I was using skin care products from an extremely popular esthetician-promoted clinical skin care brand based in Southern California – you can probably guess which one. At the time, these products were among the most popular at DermStore and seemed pretty good. They have remained popular within the marketplace. Still, after a couple days with Amarte, for me, there was no going back.

The difference in the results and experience were like heaven and earth. At a dermatology meeting, soon after switching to Amarte, another very prominent dermatologist in my region who was sitting adjacent to me asked directly, “What have you done differently to your skin? It looks great.” The only difference was Amarte products. Friends, colleagues and coworkers commented similarly. From that time forward, the superiority of these products was clear – and no products since have come close during my ongoing product reviews.

More Amarte Fans

My Korean wife has also had the opportunity to explore countless products over the years. She preferred products from a network marketing company out of Orange County and found them to be superior to everything else DermStore carried – until Amarte. Now that Amarte has been formally launched, more stories of pleasant surprises are popping up everywhere. One Korean woman in our area was introduced to Amarte last year. After trying Amarte, however, she immediately became an Amarte fanatic, inquiring frequently as to product availability pre-launch as she had fallen in love with Amarte. And, yes, her skin does look noticeably better overall and around the eyes in particular. The interesting thing in this case is that while price was a non-issue, this woman would have never tried Amarte products had she not been introduced to them personally. This reflects on a key mission of Amarte USA: to raise brand awareness so that people all over America will feel comfortable trying and ultimately benefiting from something better in skin care.

In my dermatology practice, there are two female dermatology providers – one physician assistant and one nurse practitioner. Both have Amarte stories. Lindsay, our aesthetics coordinator, has fallen in love with Daily ExfoliPowder. Her ‘secret’ is that she uses it twice daily. Since starting Amarte, Lindsay claims that her skin has never felt or looked as smooth. Anne in Eureka loves Wonder Cream and credits it with greatly relieving her rosacea tendencies. With skin care as with life, it’s sometimes difficult to see the big picture because of background noise. The skin care world is particularly noisy and it takes time for even the best products to become well known, widely admired and wildly successful.

So, what is it that makes a skin care product line rise to the top? Quality -- two qualities to be exact.

Quality That Can’t Be Faked

The most important quality of a skin care product line is that it makes the user’s skin look and feel noticeably better than it did prior to using the product. As winter fades and Valentine’s Day becomes but a memory, a sweet legacy of ‘love letters’ from bloggers and editors remain. As a newcomer to the skin care scene, Amarte has received an incredible amount of media coverage – all positive. For this we are truly grateful.

The press kicked off 2013 with this great story at nymag.com by Gina Way describing the unrivaled retinol technology in Amarte products. She also detailed how after just two weeks of use, her skin appeared firmer and looked ‘radiant.’ Gina noted the retro nature of our packaging, which confirmed the success of our intent to strike a balance between retro style and modern package fashion.

Another interesting print article came out on February 10 as a full page color story in the Style Section of the San Francisco Chronicle detailing the origins of Amarte’s North American efforts, and highlighting a personal twist.

The most recent review of the Amarte skin care line came out on February 17. This glowing review on examiner.com by Caitlin Gambee sings Amarte’s praises and encourages Amarte newcomers to trust that Amarte products are a ‘must have.’ Of her experience with Amarte Hydrolift Cream, she writes, ‘Besides my skin feeling soft and looking vibrant, it also felt firm.’

Several individual Amarte products have been the subjects of prominent articles this winter. Daily ExfoliPowder was first mention in a shine.yahoo.com article for best winter skin products. It’s quite an honor to be featured first on such a high-profile list. This mention confirms that ExfoliPowder is an incredible and unique product that warrants lead placement.

Natural Finish BB Cream has also been a darling of the blogosphere. These posts reflect the reality that Natural Finish BB Cream compares favorably to every luxury BB Cream on the market. Seasoned bloggers have come to this realization independently in more than one story.

Winter Skin Care

During winter, environmental humidity levels tend to decrease, especially inside buildings heated by forced air. Keeping skin moist during these dry periods is the most important component of winter skin health maintenance.

Body

Bathing should be done with care. Showering with warm rather than hot water is preferred, and short showers are best; less than ten minutes is optimum. Super-fatted soaps that minimize excessive removal of natural skin oils are best. Generous daily moisturization after bathing and towel drying is essential; twice daily lubrication is even better. Hot tub baths may feel great, especially on a cold winter evening, but they can bring on dryness and irritation. Moisturization is especially important after hot tub therapy.

Face

Extra attention to facial moisturization is also important during the winter months. While a hydrator and beauty balm, or BB cream, alone may be enough for a dewy fresh complexion during humid spring and summer months, winter skin care may require application of a moisturizing cream in addition to a hydrator – before BB cream is applied as a final moisturizing protectant.

Cold wind and extreme dryness have the potential to stir up rosacea flares in those predisposed to this disorder. Protective calming and moisturizing products with elemental sulfur from Amarte help keep skin calm and trouble-free during harsh winter weather.

Beyond Skin Care

Winter is also a time of decreased daylight. In some, this can lead to SADness, as in seasonal affective disorder. Light exposure has been shown to be therapeutic for this condition. Beauty, luxury and love were in the air at a recent press preview for Amarté skin care. While Dr. Craig Kraffert, board certified dermatologist, introduced this high-end skin care line, editors enjoyed views of the city and dined on Asian-inspired cuisine at the Asiate, located inside The Mandarin Oriental Hotel in NYC.

Dr. Kraffert spoke about the symphony of dermatological ingredients that make the Amarté line so special, and he shared the meaning of the Amarté symbol. At the end of the day, editors had a clear understanding of what it means to be an Amarté woman.
